Breaking Down the Notice — What NMC Has Announced

  • The National Medical Commission, through its Medical Assessment & Rating Board (MARB), has officially released the Seat Matrix for Undergraduate MBBS Courses for the Academic Year 2026–27, excluding Institutes of National Importance (INIs) like AIIMS, JIPMER, and PGIMER
  • This matrix follows the Public Notice dated 22 December 2025, which had invited applications for establishing new MBBS colleges and increasing intake capacity at existing ones, along with a subsequent Addendum dated 6 January 2026
  • The matrix reflects all approvals granted by MARB as of 13 July 2026 — both for brand-new medical colleges and for capacity expansions at colleges already running MBBS programmes
  • Crucially, NMC has stated this seat matrix remains subject to revision if required, based on decisions of the Appeal Committee or any other competent authority — meaning some numbers could still change before or even during counselling
  • Separately, NMC Secretary Dr. Raghav Langer sent a formal communication to all Medical Colleges/Institutions that had applied under the December 2025 notice, and to the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC), directing strict compliance with the approved seat numbers

The E-Bank Guarantee Requirement — What Private Colleges Must Do Now

  • All Private Medical Colleges that have been granted approval for either establishing a new MBBS college or an increase in intake capacity must furnish the required Electronic Bank Guarantee (E-Bank Guarantee) to the Director, MARB, NMC
  • Deadline: within 7 days from the date of the Public Notice — i.e., by 21 July 2026
  • Details of the E-Bank Guarantee must also be shared via email to bgugmarb@nmc.org.in and pratap.ram@nic.in
  • The Letter of Permission (LoP) — the formal document required before a college can legally admit students against its approved/increased seats — will be issued by MARB only after the E-Bank Guarantee is received and verified as being in order
  • This means some of the “increased” or “newly established” seats shown in today’s matrix are technically provisional until the concerned college completes this compliance step

Strict Compliance Warning — No Admission Beyond Approved Seats

  • NMC has explicitly directed that all Medical Colleges shall strictly ensure admissions are made only against the approved number of seats notified in this matrix for the 2026–27 academic year
  • Under no circumstances shall admissions be made in excess of the approved intake capacity
  • Any admission made beyond the approved number of seats shall be treated as a violation of the National Medical Commission Act, 2019 and its regulations, and will attract appropriate regulatory and penal action against the defaulting college/institution
  • If any Counselling Committee (Central or State) notices a discrepancy or deviation from the approved matrix, the matter must be referred to MARB for clarification — no committee is permitted to allow admissions in excess of the notified numbers under any circumstance
  • All Medical Colleges have also been advised to carefully verify their own seat matrix entry and immediately report any discrepancy or omission to the President or Director, MARB, for examination before counselling begins

What This Means for NEET UG 2026 Aspirants

  • Larger seat pool = improved admission chances: With nearly 10,000 additional MBBS seats compared to 2025, this year’s counselling has meaningfully more capacity than last year, particularly benefiting mid-to-lower rank NEET UG qualifiers
  • Private-sector growth means more fee-paying options: Since almost 79% of new seats are private, aspirants should factor in the higher fee structures typically associated with private colleges when planning their college choices and finances
  • Watch for late seat matrix revisions: As seen in 2025, this matrix could still see upward or downward revisions as pending E-Bank Guarantees, court matters, and Appeal Committee decisions get resolved — candidates should recheck the seat matrix before locking their final choice list in NEET counselling
  • 25 new colleges = new options to research: Aspirants should specifically look up the newly established colleges in their state, since these are first-time entrants to the counselling process this year and may have different competition dynamics compared to established institutions
  • MCC and State Counselling will use this exact matrix: Both the Medical Counselling Committee (for the 15% All India Quota) and respective State Counselling bodies (for the 85% state quota) are required to base their seat allotment strictly on this NMC-approved matrix

How to Check the Complete College-Wise Seat Matrix
