Selection Process 2026

  • No Written Examination — selection is purely merit-based
  • Stage 1: Merit List Preparation — Unit-wise, Trade-wise & Community-wise, based on average % of marks in Matriculation + ITI (or Class 10 + Class 12 PCB for Medical Lab Technicians)
  • Stage 2: Document Verification (DV) — Shortlisting up to 1.5 times the notified vacancies per unit
  • Stage 3: Medical Fitness Certificate submission (Annexure-XI, signed by a Government Gazetted Doctor not below Asst. Surgeon rank)
  • Stage 4: Final Engagement & Contract of Apprenticeship signing

Important Points

  • Marks used for merit are calculated on ALL subjects of Matriculation/12th — not select subjects
  • For ITI, average marks across all semesters as per consolidated statement/NTC are used
  • In case of a tie, the older candidate is ranked higher; if DOB is also same, the one who passed Matriculation earlier is ranked first
  • A candidate is allotted only ONE Unit-Department-Trade combination — all lower preferences are automatically cancelled once a higher preference is selected
  • Only ONE application per candidate is allowed — multiple applications lead to summary disqualification

NFR Apprentice 2026 — Preparation & Application Strategy

  • No written test — so focus entirely on your Matriculation and ITI marksheets; there is nothing to “study” for, but any discrepancy in declared marks leads to disqualification
  • Choose Unit-Trade preference order wisely — once you get selected against a higher preference, all lower preferences are automatically cancelled, so list your realistically achievable options high and back-ups lower
  • Check the exact NCVT/SCVT trade name against the “designated trade” table — many allied ITI trades (e.g., Welder GMAW/GTAW, Structural Welder) are treated as equivalent to a single designated trade; apply only if your ITI trade matches the approved list
  • Keep two extra copies of your photograph matching the uploaded one, for Document Verification
  • SC/ST/OBC/EWS/PwBD/EBC candidates should get category and income certificates ready well in advance, especially EWS/EBC certificates which must be dated on/after 01.04.2026
  • Since selection is on average of Matriculation + ITI percentage, candidates with higher combined percentage naturally rank higher in unit-wise/trade-wise merit — there is no fixed “cut-off” published in advance; last year’s provisional/final selected lists (available on nfr.indianrailways.gov.in) can give a rough sense of competitive trades
  • Apply early — RRC/NFR has clarified it will not be responsible for candidates unable to submit due to last-minute network/portal rush near the 19 August 2026 deadline
