About the Instant & Improvement Exam — Why It’s New This Year

The Instant & Improvement Examination is a new scheme introduced by CHSE Odisha from the 2026 academic cycle, first announced right after the declaration of the main Annual Higher Secondary (+2) Examination results on 20 May 2026. School and Mass Education Minister Nityananda Gond announced that students who passed the annual exam would now be allowed to appear for an improvement exam in one subject without having to wait for the next full academic year’s regular examination cycle. Examinations Controller Prashant Parida explained that the exam is conducted on a single day, letting students enhance their marks in one particular subject and improve their chances of admission to various colleges — with results declared quickly enough for students to apply to Higher Education institutions the same admission season.

Instant vs Improvement Exam — What’s the Difference?

  • Instant Examination: For students who secured the minimum aggregate pass marks (210 marks) in the Annual H.S. Examination 2026, but failed in only one Compulsory, Elective, or Trade/Vocational subject. Eligible students can appear only in that single failed subject to convert their overall result to Pass without waiting for the next full supplementary/annual cycle.
  • Improvement Examination: For students who have already passed the Annual H.S. Examination 2026 (regular candidates registered during the 2024–25 academic session) but wish to improve their marks in one subject — for example, to strengthen their overall percentage for competitive exam or college admission purposes.

Example: If a student scored 235 marks overall but failed only in Mathematics, they were eligible to appear for the Instant Examination solely in Mathematics. Similarly, a student who passed overall but wants a better score in, say, Chemistry, could register for the Improvement Examination in that one subject only.

What Your Improvement/Instant Result Shows

  • Student’s Name, Roll Number and Registration Number
  • Stream (Arts / Science / Commerce / Vocational)
  • Subject in which the Instant or Improvement exam was taken, along with the marks secured in that subject
  • Updated overall/aggregate marks and revised qualifying status (for Instant exam candidates whose earlier result converts from Fail to Pass upon clearing the subject)
  • Grade/qualifying status as applicable

Eligibility Criteria — Recap

  • For Improvement Examination: Regular candidates registered during the 2024–25 academic session who have already passed the Annual H.S. Examination 2026 and wish to improve marks in one subject only
  • Students could appear for their eligible exam type only in the single subject applicable to their case — multiple-subject attempts were not permitted under this scheme

Passing Criteria & Grading

  • Students must secure at least 33% marks in aggregate and a minimum of 30% in each subject to be declared Pass (as per CHSE Odisha’s standard passing norms applicable to the annual exam)
  • Where theory and practical components exist for a subject, students must clear both components separately — strong practical marks cannot compensate for a failing theory score, and vice versa
  • For Instant exam candidates: clearing the single failed subject converts the student’s overall status from Fail to Pass, with the improved subject mark now reflected in the final result
  • For Improvement exam candidates: if the new mark in the improved subject is higher than the original mark, the better of the two scores is typically reflected in the updated marksheet — students should verify the exact rule applied on their own scorecard, since CHSE’s specific improvement-marks-retention policy should be confirmed from the official notification/SOP for this newly introduced scheme

Next Steps After Checking Your Result

  • Verify all details carefully on your downloaded scorecard — name, roll number, registration number, stream, subject marks, and updated qualifying status
  • If you find any discrepancy, contact your school or CHSE Odisha immediately for correction
  • Remember the online marksheet is provisional — original hard-copy certificates and marksheets issued by CHSE will be provided through your respective Higher Secondary School by 15 August 2026
  • Digital academic documents (marksheets and certificates) are also being issued through DigiLocker for easy, verifiable access
  • If your Instant exam result has converted your status to Pass, you can now proceed with college/higher-education admission applications using your updated result
  • If your Improvement exam result has raised your subject/aggregate marks, use the updated marksheet for any admission or eligibility criteria where higher marks may help your application
  • Save a digital copy (PDF) of your result for future reference — admissions, scholarship applications, and further examinations may require it
