Part 1 — General Aptitude General English/Comprehension, Verbal & Non-Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Aptitude (Class X level), Data Interpretation, General Awareness (Coal Industry & current affairs) — 20 Questions | 20 Marks
Part 2 — Technical (Domain Specific) Post-specific technical/professional knowledge (see syllabus below) — 80 Questions | 80 Marks
Total 100 Questions | 100 Marks | 90 Minutes
Negative Marking None

Minimum Qualifying Marks (Category-Wise, Out of 100)

Category Minimum Qualifying Marks (Both Posts)
UR & EWS 50 Marks
OBC (NCL) 45 Marks
SC/ST 40 Marks
About Cut-Off Trends: WCL does not publish a long, consistent public history of Mining Sirdar/Electrical Supervisor cut-offs the way banking or SSC exams do, since this recruitment happens irregularly (only when vacancies arise in specific areas). Actual 2026 cut-offs will depend mainly on the number of applicants holding valid DGMS certificates, the difficulty level of the Technical section, and the final vacancy count. Candidates should treat the minimum qualifying marks above as the real target rather than relying on unverified “expected cut-off” figures circulating online, since Technical (Part 2) carries 80 of the 100 marks and is the biggest differentiator.

Reservation Policy — Key Points

  • SC/ST/OBC-NCL/EWS/PwBD/ESM reservation follows applicable Government of India Acts, rules & guidelines in force at the time of finalization of results
  • OBC candidates must submit a valid Non-Creamy Layer certificate + Self-Declaration; those in the creamy layer will not get OBC benefits
  • EWS candidates must submit a valid Income & Asset Certificate based on gross annual income for FY 2025-26
  • PwBD reservation requires minimum 40% benchmark disability, certified as per Rights of Persons with Disabilities Rules, 2017
  • ESM/PwBD reservation is horizontal — adjusted within their respective UR/OBC-NCL/SC/ST category, not as a separate vertical quota
  • SC/ST/OBC-NCL/EWS candidates selected purely on own merit (without relaxed standards) will be counted against UR vacancies, not reserved ones
  • Candidates from Maharashtra with SC/ST/OBC certificates need an additional Caste Validity Certificate from the Scrutiny Committee

WCL 2026 Preparation Strategy — Post-Wise Tips

  • Technical section is king — it carries 80 of 100 marks. Spend at least 70% of your preparation time on domain-specific technical topics rather than General Aptitude
  • No negative marking means you should attempt every question — never leave a question blank, since there’s zero penalty for a wrong guess
  • For Mining Sirdar: Focus heavily on Coal Mines Regulations 2017, Mines Act 1952, DGMS guidelines, ventilation & gas testing, and support systems — these form the statutory backbone of the exam and of real mine safety duties
  • For Electrical Supervisor: Master switchgear, protection systems, earthing (IS-3043), the Electricity Act 2003, and the newer CEA (Measures Relating to Safety and Electric Supply) Regulations 2023, since regulation-based questions are common
  • General Aptitude: Class X-level quantitative aptitude and data interpretation — don’t over-invest time here since it’s only 20 marks; a quick daily revision is enough for most diploma/degree holders
  • Refer to standard DGMS-recommended textbooks and previous WCL/Coal India Sirdar & Overman exam papers to understand question style, since this exam’s technical depth mirrors DGMS competency exams
  • Practice reading Coal Mines Regulations bare-act sections directly — many technical questions are framed almost verbatim from regulation clauses
  • Keep your DGMS certificates (Mining Sirdar/Overman/Gas Testing/First-Aid or Electrical Supervisory Certificate) validated and updated well before the cut-off date of 10.08.2026, as certificate validity is strictly checked during document verification

Job Profile — What Mining Sirdars & Electrical Supervisors Do

  • Mining Sirdar: A statutory supervisory position under DGMS regulations responsible for day-to-day supervision of underground/opencast working faces — inspecting roof & side support, testing for gas, ensuring safe blasting practices, overseeing face machinery operations (SDL, LHD, Continuous Miner), maintaining inspection/report books, and directly supervising workers at the coal face. This is a frontline safety-critical role central to preventing mine accidents.
  • Assistant Foreman (Trainee)(Electrical)/Electrical Supervisor: Responsible for operation, maintenance, and statutory safety compliance of electrical systems in mines — transformers, switchgear, motors, protective relays, earthing systems, sub-stations, and overhead/underground cabling. Ensures electrical installations meet Central Electricity Authority safety regulations and the Electricity Act 2003, and responds to electrical emergencies and shock incidents.
  • Selected candidates can be posted to any UG or OC mine in any of WCL’s 10 operational areas across Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, and are liable for transfer within WCL during their service.
  • Both roles offer a clear statutory career ladder — from T&S Grade-C toward Overman, Assistant Manager, and higher executive cadres within Coal India’s subsidiary structure.

WCL vs. Other Coal India Subsidiary Recruitments — Quick Comparison

  • WCL recruitment for statutory posts (Sirdar/Overman/Electrical Supervisor) requires valid DGMS certificates as a mandatory eligibility condition — unlike general Management Trainee or clerical recruitments in Coal India subsidiaries which only need a degree/diploma
  • Selection here is CBT-only, no interview — faster process compared to Bank SO/PO exams (Prelims + Mains + Interview) or many PSU Executive recruitments
  • No negative marking in WCL’s CBT — a rare and candidate-friendly feature compared to most competitive bank/SSC exams which deduct 0.25 marks per wrong answer
  • Pay structure follows the National Coal Wage Agreement (NCWA), a separate wage system from the standard IDA/CDA pay matrices used in most other PSUs and government departments
