Important Clarification — “Qualifying Marks” vs. “Cut-Off”

These two terms are often used loosely, but they mean different things in IOCL’s Apprentice recruitment:

• Qualifying Marks — the fixed, notified minimum percentage (50% for General/EWS/OBC-NCL, 45% for SC/ST/PwBD) a candidate must have scored in their qualifying examination just to be eligible to apply. This is confirmed and fixed across the current 2026 Apprentice notifications.
• Cut-Off / Closing Marks — the actual percentage at which the merit list closes for a given trade/discipline/region, which depends on the number of applicants, vacancies, and competition that year. This is decided after applications close and is not yet released for the 2026 cycle as of today.

This article focuses on the confirmed qualifying marks criteria, since the final cut-off/closing marks for 2026 have not been published by IOCL yet.

How Merit/Selection Works — Since There’s No Written Exam

• Selection is based purely on the percentage of marks in the prescribed qualifying course, ranked in descending order
• The aggregate considers marks of all subjects across all years/semesters of the qualifying course — not just the final year
• A merit list is prepared trade/discipline-wise and category-wise, based on this percentage
• Tie-Breaking Rule: If two candidates have identical percentages, the older candidate (senior by date of birth) is ranked higher; if the date of birth is also the same, higher marks in Class 10 (Matriculation) decide the rank
• Shortlisted candidates from the merit list are called for Document Verification, followed by medical fitness clearance

Other Key Eligibility Conditions Linked to Qualifying Marks

• Only regular, full-time courses are accepted — part-time, correspondence, or distance-learning qualifications do not count, regardless of the percentage scored
• Candidates must have already passed their qualifying examination as on the reckoning date (typically 31 July of the recruitment year) — candidates awaiting results are not eligible
• Candidates with higher professional qualifications (BE/B.Tech, MBA, CA, LLB, MCA, or equivalent) than the notified post requirement are not eligible, even if their qualifying-course marks meet the criteria
• Candidates who completed their prescribed qualification more than 5 years before the reckoning date are also not eligible
• Candidates who have already completed two apprenticeship trainings previously are not eligible for a third
• A candidate can apply for only one trade/discipline — applying to more than one leads to rejection of the application

• Monthly stipend as prescribed under the Apprentices Act, 1961/1973 and Apprenticeship Rules, 1992 (as amended) and IOCL’s own guidelines — the exact amount varies by apprentice category (Trade/Technician/Graduate)

• Since there is no written test, your qualifying-course percentage is the single most important number in your candidature — verify it is accurately entered in your application
• Meeting the minimum qualifying marks makes you eligible to apply — it does not guarantee shortlisting, which depends on the final merit-list cut-off for your trade and category
